Thurles Highlights World Homelessness Day

$

HomelessSat. Oct 10th is World Homelessness Day.

The number of families now homeless has risen across Ireland by 76% since the start of 2015; well that is according to new figures released by the Department of the Environment.

More than half of all homeless families are living in single room hotel accommodation in our capital city Dublin. Just over 400 families were homeless in Ireland at the start of 2015, but by the end of August that figure has increased to just over 700, representing an increase of 76% in just eight months.

Today, to our shame, some 1,500 children are now homeless, representing a 73% rise since January of 2015. These rising figures are, to say the least disturbing, particularly in a country which sets out a general guarantee to protect the fundamental personal rights of children under Article 41 of its Constitution. [To protection by the State of the family to which it (the child) belongs.]

To this end “Thurles Sleepout for Homelessness” have sent us this report

In Thurles we are using this opportunity to highlight and raise awareness about the increasing homelessness issue. It is a global phenomenon; not just in cities – it is happening here on our doorsteps.

We are all only a few steps away from homelessness. You may not agree with this statement but the statistics show that every section of society (young, old, male, female, educated, uneducated, regardless of physical or mental health, employed or not) are widely represented amongst the homeless.

So we’d like to invite all people across Tipperary to join us, on Saturday evening to show up in solidarity, especially those who are affected by the housing crisis or are actually homeless.  Whatever your issue is; be it substandard accommodation, negative equity, landlords selling property, involuntarily living with friends or relatives or actually sleeping rough: please come down to the paved area in front of the Ursuline Primary School on Liberty Square, Thurles starting at 8:00pm.

We have a line-up of speakers and musicians (TBC) to entertain and inform anyone who comes down of how and why homelessness can happen and what supports and services are available locally.  We are also inviting our elected officials to pledge to join for a minimum of 3 hours on the night. This will be a great opportunity for them to really engage with people affected in our community. As part of the evening’s events we will be holding a minutes silence and a candlelit vigil for those who are experiencing housing issues and also for those who have died as a result.

We are looking forward to our Councillors, TDs, Senators, election hopefuls and even appointed Minister joining us on the night. If you happen to be out of the county on the evening, you can still support us by sending messages to our specially set up Community Facebook Page.

Word of Warning: Make sure you wear warm clothing – don’t forget the hats, gloves and scarves, perhaps rain gear and an umbrella also, (but hopefully, DV, they won’t need to be used).

Crime – Thurles Rebukes Politicians & Resources

Despite the much anticipated Ireland V Germany soccer match being shown live on TV last night, almost 2000 people choose to leave their television sets and gather instead in the Anner Hotel Thurles to issue a sharp rebuke to politicians and perpetrators of crime.

crime2

Standing-room only at Thurles meeting on rural crime.

The message gleaned from this large attendance last night further confirmed, (if any confirmation was needed) that rural Co. Tipperary has been virtually turned into a detention centre for the victims of crime; latter victims in many cases now being forced to barricade themselves into their own homes on a nightly basis.

Those who addressed the meeting spoke of the increasing rise in burglaries and constant break-ins, which currently leaves Tipperary farmers, small businesses and home owners terrorised.

Loughmore native and Widow, Mrs Mary Morris, was just one of many who took to the floor at last night’s meeting to share her experiences and fears, after becoming the victim of such crime. Since 2011 Mrs Morrissey spoke of the effect this incident has had on her personally; informing those present that she now goes to bed every night with a loaded shotgun.

Other victims whose businesses had been targeted by criminals on multiple occasions spoke not just of their huge financial losses, but also of the mental and emotional consequences of their experiences, together with the vast financial costs of being forced to install extra security.

Vowing that last night’s meeting would not be the end of their campaign, numerous proposals were put forward to try and tackle the problem of repeated burglaries. These including:- the immediate removal of free legal aid for career criminals, the upgrading of trespass laws, the tagging of criminals and an immediate reform of our current Bail Laws which, despite Garda objections in many cases, allows for career criminals to continue reigns of terror on rural communities.

Speaking after the meeting, small groups of Tipperary residents argued for other measures:-

(A) Police work attempting to subdue crime gangs in Limerick city had been supported by the army.  “This is not a case of limited government resources, rather a case of this governments failure to use resources already available”, stated one individual. “We can send our troops to endanger themselves on the Golan Heights and not so long ago we used them as armed security on cash-in-transit vans. Remember the use of the army against gangs in Limerick City! Time now to use them, under police supervision, to halt the movement of criminal gangs in Tipperary”, he continued.

(B) “Punishments do not always fit the crime; jail time is to easy”, stated another.  “Offenders should be tagged and put publicly to work on rural social schemes, instead of further burdening the taxpayer”, he continued.

New ‘Save Our Local Community’ Committee.

The meeting which lasted for almost three hours last night was chaired by crime journalist Paul Williams. A large Garda presence also attended at last night’s Thurles meeting; these included the Chief Superintendent of the Tipperary Garda Division Mrs Catherine Keogh, Assistant Commissioner Jack Nolan and Crime Prevention Officer Tom O’Dwyer, all who informed those present that they were limited in what they could truly achieve, due to limited resources.

Locals have now set up a new organisation in conjunction with the Gardaí, called ‘Save Our Local Community’ which it hopes will network to combat rural crime.

Scam Warning – Community Alert

garda crestNumerous Thurles individuals have received ‘Scam’ telephone calls today, appearing to emanate from a telephone number – (01) 254 8323).

A recorded voice message was received by these individuals when they answered. This (01) 254 8323 number tried to convince call recipients that they were ringing on behalf of the Revenue Commissioners and requested that they should ring them back. If you receive one of these call – DO NOT phone back.

This recorded message also threatens to take legal proceedings against you should you, the recipient, fail to respond by not phoning them back.

This is the very same ‘Voice Phishing’ or ‘Vishing’ scam we warned you about on September 25th last.

Remember this scam is made possible because of telephone “clear down time”, where if the person making the call doesn’t hang up, the line remains active for up to 60 seconds. In other words when you, the customer, hang up your phone and assume that you are ringing the Revenue Commissioners, your Bank or your local Garda Station, the real person you are speaking to will be either an accomplice or the original scam artist / criminal themselves, who will then requests private data. You believing that you are speaking to your Bank (for example) will possibly pass on information, e.g. account accessing information.

Please everyone, do keep in mind that no truly genuine person or business representative, from any financial business organisation or the Public Service will ever call and seek personal, private details or any other data, either over the phone or by email contact.

Do warn elderly parents and friends about this scam, as already many people have lost thousands of Euros after being asked to provide privileged data.

New Thurles Town Park Opens To Massive Positive Fanfare

The new Thurles Town Park, which opened its gates to the Thurles public for the first time yesterday morning, has been greeted by all and sundry with massive positive vibrations. Our congratulations to Tipperary Co. Council employees, SIAC Construction, all local businesses and residents, who entered into the public consultation process leading up to the parks near completion.

This latest new town-centre venue boasts an all weather seven a side soccer pitch / basket ball court area, a skateboard park, 49 new vehicle parking spaces, two bus parking bays, traffic free walk ways and 10 outdoor gym equipment areas.

By ‘near completion’, I mean there remains still (understandably), some small jobs yet to be undertaken e.g. full completion of landscaping and the re-roofing of the now carefully preserved once old farmyard building; its architecture indicating it was  possibly built slightly before or during the Great Famine period (1843 -1848).

Lowry tierney

During my tour of the new park this afternoon I was fortunate to run into Independent TD Mr Michael Lowry and Templemore /Thurles Municipal Engineer Mr Michael Tierney, latter both surveying the overall project. Despite understandably constant interruptions from delighted mothers; all anxious to congratulate both men on their individual contributions in providing this welcome facility, I gleaned a wealth of information, which I now impart to Thurles.Info readers, who in recent days have expressed certain reservations regarding the future of this ‘state of the art’ project.

Reservations expressed on social media by local residents
Graffiti: Engineer Mr Michael Tierney confirmed that all areas are now fully painted with an anti-graffiti surface coating.
Lighting: Mr Tierney also confirmed that this new amenity area will remain fully lit, at low cost, during the hours of darkness.
Use of CCTV: Presently 8 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras survey the area on a 24 hour basis. Deputy Lowry is confident that this area can now be monitored on screen, direct to the Thurles Garda Station communications room.
Anti Social Behaviour: Deputy Lowry stated that unacceptable anti social behaviour, for the most part, was not any major problem in Thurles, when compared to large towns in Ireland of similar size. However he was confident and would be recommending that following the next full meeting of the Templemore /Thurles Municipal Council, new bye laws would be introduced to combat any such occasional breaches of acceptable conduct in this area.
Access To WI-FI: Mr Lowry and Mr Michael Tierney both confirmed that free public WI-FI would be made available within this area within the coming months, as soon as a suitable safe and secure accommodation was identified for necessary equipment installation.

Deputy Lowry stated that it was now essential that a tendering process should be hastened, with regards to the re-roofing and restoration of the picturesque salvaged farmyard building, which would further lead to the enhancement of this massive new Thurles amenity.

Deputy Lowry also stated that a huge debt of gratitude was now owing to the local business community, whose rates had financially funded this major new Thurles amenity.

A number of excellent suggestions; latter voiced by visiting mothers to Mr Lowry, have now been passed on to Mr Tierney, all of which will be shortly reviewed, bearing in mind issues of health and safety.

To all involved in any way in this venture – “Congratulations and Well Done”.

Labour ‘Tragedy’ In Thurles Classroom

$

Local ‘Tarmac Specialist’ Mick Ryan had called into his local barber’s shop on Liberty Square, for one of his two only annual haircuts.

“Jasus by the look of things you soon won’t be calling in here at all”, said barber Johnny Curran, as he surveyed Mick’s rapidly balding head.
“Sure financially won’t that be more of a tragedy for you than me,” said Mick, grinning into the mirror, as barber Johnny flung his cloth ‘hair apron’ expertly around his newest customer.truck

“Seriously, talking about tragedy”, said Johnny, “I heard the local Labour Party TD was up visiting the primary school’s sixth class the other day”.
“Probably checking their water metre”, said Mick, again grinning.

“A begorra no, Mick, at least I don’t think so”, but it seems he walked into the classroom in the middle of a discussion relating to words and their supposed meanings”, said Johnny. “It seems that this particular teacher is one of those few Labour Party supporter left in Ireland and thrilled at his presence; she asked him if he would like to lead her ‘teacher natter’; to which the politician, feeling qualified, readily agreed”, Johnny the barber continued.

“This same illustrious politician then asked the teacher’s class for an example of the word  ‘tragedy’ contained in a sentence”, continued Johnny.
One little boy (supposedly Paddy Hayes son), stood up and offered: ‘If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs over him and kills him; that would be a ‘tragedy’, Sir”.
“No”, said the Labour politician, “That would be an accident.”

A little girl now raised her hand slowly exclaiming: “If a school bus carrying fifty children drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a ‘tragedy’, Sir”, she squealed out excitedly.
“I’m afraid not”, said the Labour politician, “That’s what we would call a great loss”.

The room fell silent, according to Johnny, with now no other children volunteering any answers. The Labour politician visually searched the room; “Isn’t there someone here who can surely give me an example of a sentence containing the word ‘tragedy’?” he pleaded

Finally, from the back of the room, Snotser Bourke raised his hand and in a loud voice proclaimed: “If a plane carrying you and Joan Burton was struck by a ‘friendly fire missile’ while travelling over Soviet Russia and God forbid ye were blown into tiny smithereens, surely that would be a ‘tragedy’.”

“Fantastic, you’re a great lad”, exclaimed the Labour politician. “That’s totally right and now can you tell me why that would be tragedy?”
“Well Sir,” says little Snotser “It has to be a tragedy, because according to what my father believes it certainly wouldn’t be a great loss and it probably wouldn’t be a fecking accident either.”

“True for the Bible”, said Mick, “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings for sure. I suppose you won’t be charging me as much for this haircut, since there is less to cut, what with current austerity and everything.”

Thurles Man Wins ‘Hidden Hero’ Award

The 2015 ‘Hidden Heroes’ Awards, hosted by Hidden Hearing, and sponsored by Age Action; Home Instead Senior Care; GP Buddy; Travel Fox; Irish Deaf Society and Vodafone, this week recognised the work of those across Ireland who give up their free time for the benefit of others.

At this the fifth annual ‘Hidden Heroes’ awards ceremony held in Dublin, amongst the 21 people and organisations who were recognised for their hard work and contributions to local communities (chosen I understand from some 2,000 submissions), was Thurles local Mr Patrick Ryan, No. 30, Kennedy Park, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.

Hidden-Heroes

Patrick (pictured forth from left in the picture shown above), won the overall ‘Family Hero’ Award for his 35 years of unwavering dedication to his late brother Michael, (RIP).

TV Broadcaster Mary Kennedy, comparing this event, stated that this occasion gave an opportunity nationally to each of us in celebrating the achievements of Irish people from every walk of life, “who are quite simply helping others, without expecting anything whatsoever in return”.

Also making presentations and addressing those in attendance, was the Lord Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní Dhálaigh, who stated; “Not only do these hero’s cope with their challenges with courage and dignity, but they make a real difference to their families, their workplaces, the sports field and their communities in the process. They are not shouting about what they do but their friends, family members, team members and co-workers know who they are and have brought them here to celebrate their achievements today and we are delighted to celebrate with you.”

The Managing Director of Hidden Hearing Mr Stephen Leddy said he continued to be in total awe at how people overcome the difficulties they face, “not only when it comes to their hearing, but also right across the board.”
We at Hidden Hearing are delighted to have an opportunity to say, ‘well done and thank you,” Mr Leddy continued.

A former cancer survivor himself, Mr Patrick Ryan was presented with his Dublin Crystal Glass award by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní Dhálaigh. Mr Ryan was accompanied to the glitzy event by his brother, Tom, his sister in law Ina Ryan and his niece, Brid Ryan.
